Ranking Member Lofgren Applauds New NSF NAIRR Program
(WASHINGTON, DC)—Today, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced a pilot program for the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR). The program will support AI research and education by providing expanded access to computational resources, high-quality data, educational tools, and user support.
“One of the major barriers to developing an AI-capable workforce and ensuring U.S. leadership in AI research is a lack of access to computing and training data for all but large companies and the most well-resourced institutions,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “I applaud the National Science Foundation and its many federal and nonfederal partners for launching an effort to address this disparity and democratize access to AI tools.
“The NAIRR pilot program is an important first step to ensure researchers across this country have the means to tackle our hardest problems using AI and contribute to AI trustworthiness, including communities and regions that have traditionally been left out of the conversation. The House Science Committee led in the conceptualization of the NAIRR in the National AI Initiative Act, and Congress should now work to authorize and expand this important program by passing the CREATE AI Act of 2023.”
